Chapter Four

The minute we pulled in front of the country club, I leapt from the truck and raced up to the washroom.

I felt sick, I washed my mouth out with cold water and stared at myself in the mirror.

I looked okay, maybe a little disheveled, but passable.

I certainly didn’t look like I’d just given two brothers head in the front seat of their truck. Sometimes I didn’t know what took over my body when the twins were involved.

I strolled out after I’d composed myself and found my seat once again at the family table.

The twins couldn’t keep their eyes off me as I crossed the floor, but instead of flattering me, it made me uncomfortable for once.

I didn’t like the way they made me feel after we fooled around. They didn’t want to get to know me at all, and they were so immature compared to Cole.

Speaking of which, he sat next to me again. He was in a tuxedo this time and looked mighty fine. More than fine. Smoking, steaming, sexy hot.

“Looks like we’re table partners again,” he said with a crooked smile.

“Looks that way,” I replied with a grin of my own.

“Everybody’s all decked out tonight,” he said, glancing around the room. His gaze slid across everybody and fixed on me. “Nobody looks as good as you do, Camille.”

“Thanks,” I said, “you clean up pretty nice yourself.”

I felt awful though, flirting with him and having him being so kind to me when just a short time before I had been acting like a hussy with his little brothers.

“Did I see you hop in Taylor’s truck?” he asked a few minutes into the conversation.

“I did, they gave me a ride,” I replied.

“Did I see that truck pulling out of the Deep Creek forest road?” he asked slowly, scanning my face for sincerity.

“You did,” I replied, “I needed to go to the bathroom.”

I lied, I hated lying to him, but somebody like Cole couldn’t know how dirty I really was. I liked him so much, I couldn’t confess my sins to him just yet.

I was such a mess, I always had been.

“All right, darlin’,” he said in a low tone, “Just be careful with those two. They’re charming like our daddy, but lack the maturity to handle a beautiful girl like you. Remember that.”

I gulped and took a long sip of water before I composed myself enough to say, “Thanks for the advice. I reckon if anyone would know that about them, it would be you.”

“I do,” he replied and looked me in the eye, “And I know when a girl’s getting all twisted up inside over those twins. You have that look about you, Cammie, and I don’t want to see you ate up and spit out.”

“But you’re sticking around to protect me, right?” I asked, looking up at him from under my thick lashes. I knew this angle was good for me, it added shadows to my cheeks and made my eyes look bigger.
